ONTARIO

Much more than major cities and Niagara Falls Ontario offers over 250,000 lakes and vast areas of forest !

— Alistair McIlwraith —

Ontario has been my home for all of my adult life.

I have enjoyed the cities, towns and villages.

However paddling a river or just wandering around

… exploring the vast ‘wilderness’ of this million square kilometre  province is where I am most content.

Ontario is home, a place of familiarity.

This is Home

Most of these photos were taken in Cambridge, and North Dumfries Township bear my home in Cambridge. The covered bridge and buggy are in West Montrose.

It is an area that reflects the Scottish and Mennonite cultures that first settled in this place.

Highway 17

Halfway to the top off the province is highway 17, wide its way east - west from Ottawa to Manitoba, a stretch of almost 2000 km.

We made a number of trips to Algoma Country, along the north shore of Lake Superior. Places like Barchewanna Bay, Lake Superior Provincial Park and Thunder Bay were visited.

18th century Canada was dominated by two powerful trading entities, The Hudson’s Bay Company and the North West Company. The latter had their main trading post, Fort William in what in now Thunder Bay. The present fort is a reconstruction, using the plans from the archives,

One thing I remember from our children were young, was being asked for a map. I didn’t have one and their reaction was ‘We’re get lost. They did not know realize that north of Superior there are two main east-west roads, Highways 11 and 17, which go to the same place.

You don’t need a map, just make sure you can get to the next gas station.

Going

“Up-North”

There are places Ontarian’s visit tho get away and relax., Muskoka and Kawartha Lakes. We have always referred to it as going “up north”.

In reality this is only a 150-200 km north of Toronto. For reference, from my home in Cambridge it is 850 km to James bay in the far north of the province. So these photos are from the ’Near North’, cottage country.

Cities, Towns and Villages

The major cities we have visited as tourists include Toronto, and Ottawa.

Toronto is close so we have done many day trips with interesting visits to places like Casa Loma., The ROM (Royal Ontario Museum) and Ripley’s Aquarium.

Ottawa hosts seven national museums as well as many special exhibits and events.

We also spend a lot of time doing day trips all around southern Ontario.

Day Trips

Just as the title say, these are images from places that are an easy days trek from home.

When visitors come, we take them to many of places illustrated here, including  like Fort George, Niagara Falls to an Oberon Class submarine on the beach at Port Burwell, Point Pelee, the southern tip of mainland Canada (there are a couple of islands a little farther south in Lake Erie).
